From learning gaps to better results, Filipino students are showing signs of progress

PHILIPPINES – For years, the Philippines has struggled with poor results in international education assessments. Now, Filipino students are showing signs of progress in the latest PISA results, a development welcomed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

The results measure the performance of 15 year old students in key areas such as reading, mathematics and science, offering a snapshot of how Filipino learners are keeping pace globally.

Marcos welcomed the country’s improved showing, seeing it as a sign that efforts to strengthen basic education are beginning to bear fruit.

But the latest results also bring a bigger challenge: turning progress into lasting gains and making sure Filipino students continue moving forward.

For a country that has long faced learning gaps, the latest PISA results offer a reason to celebrate, while reminding educators and policymakers that the work is far from over.
