PHILIPPINES – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered the National Housing Authority to immediately provide safe and decent homes for families in Lubao, Pampanga who lost their houses in the massive flooding.

The affected residents, all from Barangay Santa Rita, lost their homes after raging floodwaters swept through the area following the collapse of the Sto. Cristo Dam during heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon.

Marcos met with 201 families, or 649 individuals, during his visit to the flood-hit community.

The displaced families have been receiving P10,000 in financial assistance, hot meals, food packs and kitchen kits from the Department of Social Welfare and Development while staying in evacuation centers.

Pampanga officials also vowed to prioritize the rehabilitation of the damaged dam to help prevent another devastating surge of floodwaters.

The President was accompanied by DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian and Department of Public Works and Highways Secretary Vince Dizon as the government assessed what additional assistance could be provided to the affected families.

For those who lost nearly everything to the flood, the government’s next challenge is not only to provide temporary shelter but to help them rebuild a safer place to call home.
