PHILIPPINES – For President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the latest case against his cousin and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez puts a familiar political question in the spotlight: can accountability prevail when family ties are involved?

Malacañang says the answer is yes.

The Palace on Monday said it respects the Office of the Ombudsman’s decision to file a plunder case against Romualdez over alleged irregularities in flood control projects.

Palace Press Officer Claire Castro reiterated Marcos’ position that anyone found responsible must face the consequences—whether a relative, friend, political ally or opponent.

The Ombudsman alleges that Romualdez and former Ako Bicol Rep. Zaldy Co engaged in coordinated acts that led to the alleged accumulation of around ₱56 billion in ill-gotten wealth from 2022 to 2025.

For Marcos, the case is also a test of a promise he made publicly. During his State of the Nation Address in July, he acknowledged that pursuing cases against Romualdez would be painful, but insisted that doing what is right must come before family or political loyalty.

As the legal battle moves forward, those charged will have the opportunity to present their defense, while investigators face the task of proving their allegations in court.

For Malacañang, the message remains clear: when the evidence points to accountability, family ties should not stand in the way.
