Britain is taking a tougher stance on Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, adding new pressure to an already strained relationship with Israel.

The UK announced a ban on imports of goods produced in Israeli settlements, while also imposing measures targeting companies involved in financing or supporting settlement construction. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said the move was aimed at addressing what he described as escalating settler violence and protecting the possibility of a two state solution.

The measures were backed by France, Canada and other countries, signaling growing international concern over settlement expansion and violence in the West Bank. While the economic impact is expected to be limited, the sanctions carry significant political weight.

Israel responded sharply. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar announced plans to close the British consulate in East Jerusalem and imposed additional measures against British officials, escalating the diplomatic dispute between the two countries.

The confrontation now goes beyond trade. Britain says its actions are meant to uphold international law and preserve the possibility of Palestinian statehood, while Israel has condemned the sanctions as foreign interference.

As pressure over settlement expansion grows, the latest measures raise a bigger question: could economic sanctions become another front in the increasingly bitter diplomatic battle over the future of the West Bank and the prospects for peace?
