Remulla rules out chief justice bid, calls for judiciary soul-searching

MANILA – Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla has ruled out applying for the next Supreme Court chief justice, saying the judiciary must instead take a hard look at itself amid concerns surrounding the justice system.

Remulla said he is not seeking the position despite the Judicial and Bar Council opening the application process for the successor of Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo, who is set to retire in November.

Instead, Remulla urged members of the judiciary to undergo what he described as a “soul-searching” process, as the courts face renewed scrutiny over their role in upholding justice and public trust.

The upcoming vacancy will be significant as Gesmundo’s successor will become the first Supreme Court chief justice appointed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

The Judicial and Bar Council has set October 13 as the deadline for applications and nominations for the position.

Remulla’s decision removes his name from speculation surrounding the high-profile vacancy, while the search for the next chief justice moves forward.
