PHILIPPINES – Haze continues to blanket parts of the Philippines, with dangerously high PM2.5 levels recorded in Cebu and Zamboanga City amid reports of transboundary smoke from fires in Indonesia.

The DENR-Environmental Management Bureau recorded “acutely unhealthy” air quality in Talisay City, Cebu, while Zamboanga City registered “very unhealthy” levels as of 6 a.m. Thursday.

The agency said the haze may be linked to ongoing fires in Kalimantan, Indonesia, with prevailing winds possibly carrying smoke toward the Philippines.

Other areas, including Palawan, Naga, Iloilo, Tacloban and Davao, recorded air quality considered “unhealthy for sensitive groups.”

PM2.5 refers to microscopic particles that can penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream, potentially triggering breathing problems, asthma and heart-related complications.

Metro Manila, meanwhile, recorded generally better air quality, with most monitoring stations posting “good” PM2.5 levels. Some areas in Caloocan, Las Piñas, Parañaque and Quezon City registered “fair” readings.

The DENR-EMB advised residents, especially those in areas visibly affected by haze, to minimize prolonged outdoor activities while the agency continues to monitor air quality nationwide.

As haze drifts across parts of the country, authorities are urging the public to stay alert—because what may look like distant smoke can still pose a very real threat to the air people breathe.
