PHILIPPINES – Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla said the anti-graft body is investigating flood control projects in Davao City, which he described as the “epicenter” of flood control funding before the Marcos administration.
Remulla made the statement during a House budget hearing as lawmakers asked about possible irregularities involving flood control projects implemented under the previous administration.
He said investigators are facing challenges in gathering information and examining what he described as a deeply rooted system surrounding the implementation of these projects.
“It’s not easy, let’s just say that the ‘epicenter’ of flood control before the Marcos administration came was Davao City,” Remulla said.
The Ombudsman, however, clarified that describing Davao as the epicenter does not mean that corruption has already been established.
“We are still studying this because it is important for us to see the evidence on the ground,” Remulla said.
He added that the investigation is not limited to Davao City, as the Ombudsman is also examining other areas to determine whether there were irregularities or patterns in the implementation and funding of flood control projects.
