Remulla unfazed by recantations, says cases vs Romualdez will push through

PHILIPPINES – Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla is standing firm on the planned filing of cases against former House Speaker Martin Romualdez, despite the recent recantations of some witnesses in the flood control investigation.

Remulla urged the public to “relax” and said the Ombudsman’s cases will not depend solely on the statements of witnesses who have withdrawn their allegations.

The Ombudsman has previously said its investigation has gathered evidence against Romualdez and that cases involving the alleged flood control anomalies are nearing the filing stage.

The issue gained fresh attention after witness Orly Guteza reportedly recanted allegations involving Romualdez. Despite this, the Ombudsman has maintained that other evidence and witnesses remain part of the investigation, with reports saying as many as 28 witnesses are being considered.

Romualdez has denied the allegations and his camp has questioned Remulla’s statements, accusing the Ombudsman of prejudging the case.

Remulla, however, said the investigation will continue and that the recantations will not derail the filing of charges if investigators determine there is sufficient evidence.

The Ombudsman is investigating alleged irregularities in flood control projects, including accusations of a massive kickback scheme involving government infrastructure funds.

With the cases moving closer to the filing stage, Remulla’s latest remarks signal that the withdrawal of individual witnesses will not put the broader investigation on hold.
