The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has rescued and evacuated more than 15,800 residents across Luzon as intensified southwest monsoon rains triggered widespread flooding in several provinces.

PCG spokesperson Commodore Noemie Cayabyab said Coast Guard teams conducted simultaneous rescue operations and preemptive evacuations in coordination with local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices.

“Our ongoing efforts are supported by the anticipatory deployment of personnel, floating assets, land vehicles, and rescue equipment to strategic locations,” Cayabyab said.

She said positioning response units near high-risk communities has helped shorten the time needed to reach families requiring assistance.

The spokesperson added that the continuing operations demonstrate the PCG’s strengthened humanitarian assistance and disaster response capabilities.

PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan attributed the agency’s improved preparedness to its modernization, including the acquisition of additional equipment, deployment of more personnel and provision of a Quick Response Fund to address operational needs during emergencies.

As severe weather persists, the PCG said it continues to coordinate with local governments and other concerned agencies in conducting rescue, evacuation and community assistance operations.
