PHILIPPINES – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is backing food processing as a way to address egg oversupply and protect farmers from losses, highlighting a cooperative in Batangas that turns excess eggs into products with longer shelf life.

During his visit to the Batangas Egg Producers Multipurpose Cooperative, Marcos said the government is working with farmers to prevent unsold eggs from going to waste while creating greater value for their products.

With support from the Department of Science and Technology and the Department of Agriculture, the cooperative processes eggs into pasteurized, frozen and powdered products, allowing them to be stored longer and reach wider markets.

The facility also has a PHP50-million spray-drying facility capable of producing powdered eggs that can last up to two years.

Government support has helped the cooperative increase sales by 125 percent and productivity by 25 percent.

The initiative aims to turn an oversupply problem into an opportunity, keeping eggs from going to waste while putting more income back into the hands of Filipino farmers.
