Japan has reaffirmed its support for the International Criminal Court after the United States imposed sanctions on ICC President Tomoko Akane, a Japanese national.

The Japanese government described Washington’s decision as “very unfortunate,” saying it would continue supporting the ICC and its efforts to uphold the rule of law and prosecute serious crimes of concern to the international community.

Akane, the first Japanese national to serve as ICC president, was sanctioned by the United States on August 18 along with senior ICC trial lawyer Abdoulaye Seye of Senegal. The measures can freeze assets under US jurisdiction and restrict access to the US financial system.

Washington has accused the ICC of threatening US sovereignty and overstepping its authority, particularly through investigations and cases involving American and Israeli officials. The United States is not a member of the court.

Japan said it would continue communicating with the United States and other concerned countries while maintaining its commitment to strengthening the international rule of law. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi also expressed regret over the sanctions.

Human Rights Watch, meanwhile, urged Japan to take a stronger stance against the sanctions, describing Washington’s action as an attack on the court and its mandate.
