MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Justice is investigating reports that young people are being recruited and mentored through online platforms and group chats linked to violent extremism.

Justice Secretary Fredderick Vida said authorities are looking into cases where minors may have been contacted online, added to group chats and influenced by people encouraging or discussing violent acts.

“We’re confirming information na minementor yung mga bata,” Vida said, adding that investigators are examining who may have been communicating with them and what advice or instructions were being shared.

The probe comes after recent violent incidents involving minors, including the August 18 shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University. Police are separately examining the digital activity of the student involved in that attack.

Vida said authorities are also assessing whether some incidents may contain elements associated with terrorism, particularly when violence is intended to create fear among the public.

The DOJ is preparing prosecutors to handle evidence that may emerge from the investigation and any related cases filed in court.

The department also urged parents to closely monitor their children’s online activity and maintain open communication with them.

Vida likewise appealed to the public and media to avoid repeatedly sharing violent content, warning that widespread circulation could encourage copycat behavior.

The DOJ is still awaiting any formal complaint related to the Zamboanga City school shooting.
