BEIJING – Typhoon Bavi is making its way to southeast of Taiwan with winds nearing 200 kph.
Bavi is certain to become the most powerful storm in the Asia-Pacific region since Super Typhoon Kong-rey in 2024.
Although its winds have eased slightly, the storm remains exceptionally vast.
It spans roughly 1,000 km, making it the largest typhoon to approach Taiwan since 1987.
Forecasters predict the storm to pass northern Taiwan before hitting China’s Fujian province by Saturday evening.
In response, authorities across Japan, Taiwan, and China have issued warnings urging residents to brace for violent winds, flooding, landslides, and storm surges.
The potential impact of Bavi is heightened by broader climate trends, including the expected emergence of El Nino, which scientists say could fuel more frequent and intense typhoons in the region.
