TORONTO, Canada — The Embassy of Canada in the Philippines extended its thoughts to the affected individuals from the recent onslaught of Typhoon Fung-Wong across the country’s Luzon and Visayas regions.
In a Facebook post on Monday, the embassy said that it will “continue to coordinate with partners from the Philippine government, humanitarian agencies, and the international community to determine how best to help address urgent needs and support recovery efforts.”
According to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), the death toll from the tropical storm reached 18 on Tuesday, 12 of whom are from the Cordillera Administrative Region in northern Luzon.
Filipinos in Canada also expressed their worries and sympathy for their affected families and friends in the country.
In a CBC Toronto report, Manila-native Edna Alejo said she’s worried about her loved ones in the Philippines and the state of her flood-prone residence, which she will return to in December after her stay in Toronto to visit her sister and niece.
Father Lorenzo Salandanan, a priest from the Our Lady of Assumption Church in Forest Hill, said their parish has been raising monetary aid to send to the Philippines, after receiving news of the typhoon’s devastating aftermath.
“It’s easier to bring the monetary funds because that’s what they need at this time,” he told the Toronto-based news outlet.
The widespread destruction left by Typhoon Fung-Wong in the Southeast Asian country only followed a week after the havoc caused by Typhoon Kalmaegi, which the OCD reported had killed at least 232 people in the Visayas region.
