Several communities across British Columbia are under rainfall warnings as a powerful storm system brings heavy precipitation, strong winds and possible flooding to the province’s coastal regions.
Environment Canada issued warnings for parts of Metro Vancouver, Vancouver Island and the Central Coast, with some areas expected to receive as much as 175 millimetres of rain.
The North Shore, including West Vancouver and North Vancouver, as well as Coquitlam, Maple Ridge and Howe Sound, were forecast to receive up to 80 millimetres of rainfall. Higher elevations could experience heavier amounts.
Meanwhile, parts of Vancouver Island and the Central Coast were expected to receive between 100 and 130 millimetres, with localized totals reaching 175 millimetres.
Authorities warned that intense rainfall could cause localized flooding, rising river levels, water accumulation on roads and possible road closures. Residents were also advised to stay away from rivers, creeks and drainage channels.
The severe weather has also raised concerns over transportation. BC Ferries warned of possible service disruptions due to strong winds and rough conditions along several coastal routes, prompting passengers to check sailing updates before travelling.
The BC River Forecast Centre likewise issued high streamflow advisories for parts of the South Coast, Central Coast and Vancouver Island as rivers were expected to rise rapidly.
Weather officials said the system is only the first in a series of storms expected to affect the province through the following week, bringing more periods of heavy rain and strong winds.
Residents are being urged to monitor weather advisories, prepare for possible flooding and clear leaves from storm drains to help reduce water buildup.
