PHILIPPINES – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is checking the readiness of major venues in Metro Manila as the Philippines prepares to host the 49th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in November.
Marcos inspected the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City as part of preparations for the regional meetings, which will bring ASEAN leaders and delegates to the country.
The PICC has undergone extensive restoration, including repairs to its marble floors, restoration of its lobby ceiling and furniture, and the cleaning of its concrete walls. Its 3,068 droplights were also restored, while meeting areas received upgraded lighting, audio and audiovisual systems.
The historic Coconut Palace has also been renovated ahead of the summit. The landmark, designed by National Artist for Architecture Francisco “Bobby” Mañosa, was formally reopened in August after restoration work aimed at preserving its Filipino architectural character.
Marcos said the Coconut Palace was restored partly to provide additional space for the ASEAN Summit, while also preserving features that reflect Filipino craftsmanship and the country’s architectural heritage.
The Philippines is scheduled to host the 49th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in November, with Metro Manila serving as the main venue for the regional gatherings under the theme “Navigating Our Future, Together.”
The preparations are taking place alongside ongoing ASEAN meetings in Manila, including gatherings of senior officials focused on the agenda and logistics for the November summit.
With the PICC and Coconut Palace being readied for international delegates, the government is also using the summit preparations to showcase Filipino architecture, art and craftsmanship while upgrading facilities for major diplomatic events.
