British Columbia NDP Leader David Eby is promising measures to lower gasoline and diesel costs as the provincial election campaign turns to affordability and household expenses.

Eby’s proposal includes a temporary 10-cent-per-litre reduction in the provincial motor fuel tax on both gasoline and diesel. He also wants to establish a permanent “price guard” system to regulate fuel prices at the pump.

Eby said the measures could save an average two-car household up to $100 a month, while costing the provincial treasury about $250 million. Under the proposal, the B.C. Utilities Commission would set a maximum price for fuel stations, with the benchmark adjusted weekly based on crude oil prices.

The NDP leader said the plan is intended to provide more stability and transparency for drivers, arguing that British Columbians are paying too much for fuel. The announcement was made at a gas station in Surrey as the campaign enters its second week.

B.C. Conservative interim leader Lorne Doerkson criticized the proposal, pointing to Eby’s previous $1,000 household rebate promise during the 2024 election that was later not implemented. Eby responded that circumstances had changed and cited the elimination of the provincial carbon tax as a major tax reduction delivered by his government.

While Eby focused on fuel prices, Doerkson highlighted energy infrastructure, backing the proposed Pacific Link pipeline and calling for another pipeline connecting northern Alberta with British Columbia’s coast.

The competing announcements reflect two different campaign themes: the NDP emphasizing direct cost relief and fuel-price regulation, while the Conservatives are highlighting resource development and energy infrastructure.

The B.C. election is scheduled for October 24, with parties continuing to release policy proposals ahead of the vote.
