CANADA – On July 8, 2026, the Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, released a joint statement on defence financing along with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer. They emphasized their intention to work together even more closely as they develop their goals within the agreed upon mandates.
In the statement, they acknowledged the shared challenge they faced as partners on the defence front, as they “scale defence industrial capacity, strengthen resilience, and support deterrence and defence.” They also welcomed their allies’ support in “developing multilateral approaches to defence financing and procurement”, including the initiatives already in motion for security.
The two countries have high hopes that these initiatives will move to encourage further investment in defence, and that the efforts to support the Defence, Security and Resilience Bank as well as the Multilateral Defence Mechanism will bring forth more movement in the defense industrial capacity of the collective.
