MANILA – A four-minute minor phreatomagmatic eruption occurred in Taal Volcano, from 7:13 a.m. to 7:17 a.m., on Tuesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcano and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported.
It generated plumes reaching 450 meters above the crater.
Phreatomagmatic eruptions are caused by the interaction of magma and water.
Earlier, Phivolcs Volcano Monitoring and Eruption Prediction Division chief Ma. Antonia Bornas said volcanic activities or eruptions of Taal Volcano are usual and recurring since 2021.
Taal Volcano’s small eruptions, which happen several times a day, are also considered normal behavior, according to Phivolcs.
Taal Volcano, located in Batangas province, remains under Alert Level 1 (low-level volcanic unrest).
Sudden steam-driven or minor phreatomagmatic eruptions, minor ashfall, and potentially lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gases may still occur within Taal Volcano Island (TVI).
Entry into TVI, the volcano’s permanent danger zone, should be prohibited.
