American basketball player Bennie Boatwright has officially become a Filipino citizen after completing his naturalization process and securing his Philippine passport, clearing a major step toward representing Gilas Pilipinas in international competitions.
The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas confirmed the development through executive director Erika Dy during its national congress in Ortigas on October 27.
Dy said Boatwright’s naturalization process, which began in 2024, had finally been completed. She added that his passport was already ready and expressed anticipation over his potential contribution to the national team.
Boatwright previously took his oath of allegiance to the Philippines on October 21, completing a key requirement under Republic Act No. 12323, the law granting him Philippine citizenship.
The 30-year-old, 6-foot-10 forward has built a reputation as a scoring big man, particularly during his stint with the San Miguel Beermen in the Philippine Basketball Association. He helped the team win the PBA championship and delivered strong performances as an import.
His addition is expected to provide another option for Gilas head coach Tim Cone, joining the national team’s pool of naturalized players that includes Justin Brownlee and Ange Kouame.
Boatwright could be considered for the Philippines’ upcoming campaign in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers, subject to confirmation of his eligibility by the international basketball governing body.
Gilas is scheduled to face Syria on November 27 and Iran on November 29 in Seremban, Malaysia, during the next qualifying window.
The Philippines is seeking to strengthen its roster as it continues its bid to secure a place in the 2027 FIBA World Cup in Qatar.
With his naturalization completed, Boatwright’s potential debut for the national team is now closer, although his participation will still depend on the necessary FIBA clearance.
