A private jet carrying nine people crashed into a residential area in Palm Beach County, Florida, killing everyone on board and leaving a burning crater along a busy roadway.
The Learjet 60 was traveling from Austin, Texas, to North Eleuthera in the Bahamas when it went down in the Greenacres area at around 12:50 p.m. on Sunday, November 1, according to aviation authorities.
Air traffic control recordings captured the crew reporting ice accumulation and moderate turbulence before the situation rapidly deteriorated. The pilots initially requested to climb higher, but the aircraft suddenly began losing altitude at an alarming rate.
One pilot declared an emergency and issued a mayday call as the jet descended thousands of feet per minute. In the final moments, the cockpit recording captured the pilot warning that the aircraft was about to hit the ground.
The plane plunged nose-first onto the roadway and burst into flames, sending thick smoke into the surrounding neighborhood. The crash happened close to homes and passing vehicles, prompting authorities to evacuate around 600 residents from a nearby mobile home community.
There were initially no reports of casualties on the ground, although officials later confirmed that one person on the ground was injured. All nine people aboard the aircraft were killed.
The National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation, with support from the Federal Aviation Administration. Investigators are examining the aircraft, weather conditions and the events leading up to the steep descent. Possible ice buildup is among the factors being considered, but authorities have yet to establish the cause of the crash.
