Police have arrested one of three men who allegedly attempted to rob a 46-year-old South Korean tourist along Macapagal Boulevard in Barangay Tambo, Parañaque City, on Saturday night, October 31.
The two other suspects remain at large following the incident, which involved a struggle between the victim and the alleged robbers.
According to police, the tourist was walking to buy food at around 9:15 p.m. when three men riding motorcycles approached and followed him. The suspects were reportedly wearing clothing similar to those used by motorcycle taxi and ride-hailing service drivers.
When the men attempted to snatch his bag, the tourist fought back. One of the suspects allegedly fired a gun, apparently to intimidate him into surrendering his belongings.
Police officers conducting a Borderless Policy System operation in the area heard the gunshots and immediately responded, leading to the arrest of a 30-year-old suspect from Sta. Cruz, Manila.
Southern Police District Director PBGen. Rodel Pastor said the victim was taken to a hospital after sustaining scratches on his head and knees.
The stolen bag has yet to be recovered. It reportedly contained around ₱12,000 in cash, the tourist’s passport and a hotel keycard.
Scene of the Crime Operatives recovered three bullet casings at the location. Police also confiscated a 9mm firearm, six rounds of ammunition, bonnets, helmets, shoes, ride-hailing uniforms and motorcycle plates believed to be fake.
Investigators said the suspects were not legitimate motorcycle taxi or delivery riders and had purchased their clothing online to disguise themselves.
The arrested suspect declined to comment. Police also said he was being investigated in connection with three carnapping incidents and was facing a separate rape case.
The Southern Police District, in coordination with the Manila Police District, continues to search for the two remaining suspects.
Authorities are also reminding the public to remain vigilant, while legitimate delivery riders have raised concerns that criminals using fake ride-hailing uniforms could undermine public trust in their profession.
