Applicants waiting for work permit extensions and Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWPs) in Canada can now get a more personalized estimate of how long their applications may take.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada updated its processing-time system in late September 2026, allowing applicants to check an estimated remaining wait based on the date their application was submitted.
Under the new system, applicants can select “Work permit extension in Canada” under the Temporary Residence category. The tool can show the estimated wait in weeks, the number of applicants ahead of them and the total number of applications awaiting a decision.
The personalized estimates currently apply to people inside Canada who are extending an existing work permit, changing the conditions of an existing permit or applying for their first PGWP after graduating as an international student.
As of September 26, 2026, IRCC estimated that about 202,900 work permit extension and related applicants were awaiting decisions, according to the department’s latest data cited by CIC News.
The update also provides applicants with an estimate based on when they applied, rather than relying only on a general processing-time figure calculated when they check the website.
For workers whose permits are nearing expiry, the change may provide greater visibility while they wait. Applicants who submit an extension before their existing permit expires can generally benefit from maintained status, allowing them to continue working under the conditions of their current permit while IRCC processes the extension, provided they remain in Canada.
The personalized processing-time system is part of IRCC’s broader effort to provide applicants with more individualized information about immigration application wait times.
