MAKKAH, Saudi Arabia — A powerful lightning bolt struck the Makkah Clock Tower as thunderstorms swept through the holy city this week, with the dramatic moment captured on video.
Footage showed lightning hitting the top of the 601-meter tower as repeated flashes illuminated the sky over Makkah.
Saudi Arabia’s National Center for Meteorology had issued weather alerts for the Makkah region covering thunderstorms, strong winds and reduced visibility during the period.
The Makkah Clock Tower, also known as the Abraj Al Bait Clock Tower, is equipped with a lightning protection system designed to channel electrical discharges safely toward the ground.
No injuries or damage were reported following the strike, and operations in the area continued normally. Reports and footage of the lightning strike circulated widely on social media as severe weather affected parts of western Saudi Arabia.
