Trump criticizes Canada over retaliatory tariffs

WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump criticized Canada on Sunday after Prime Minister Mark Carney announced new retaliatory tariffs on US goods.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump accused Canada of seeking special treatment from the United States and criticized tariffs imposed on American agricultural products.

“Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!!” Trump wrote.

He did not announce any new US trade measures against Canada.

Carney said Saturday that Canada would impose new tariffs on US goods starting September 8. Steel and dairy products are among the sectors expected to be affected.

The Canadian government has not yet released the complete list of goods covered or the tariff rates.

The announcement followed the implementation of new US tariffs of 50 percent on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods on Saturday.

The affected goods account for about 5.5 percent of Canada’s exports to the United States.

The latest measures come after trade negotiations between the two countries broke down. Neither government has announced when talks will resume.
