Why the Philippines is so flood-prone

The Philippines is highly vulnerable to flooding because of its geography, climate and rapid urbanization.
Located along the western Pacific typhoon belt, the country regularly experiences tropical cyclones, monsoon rains and intense downpours. Its thousands of islands, extensive coastlines, rivers and low-lying communities make many areas naturally prone to flooding.
In cities like Metro Manila, rapid development has replaced open spaces with concrete surfaces, leaving less ground for rainwater to be absorbed. Clogged waterways, inadequate drainage, land subsidence and development in flood-prone areas can further worsen the problem.
Climate change is also increasing the risk of more intense rainfall and rising sea levels.
Flooding, therefore, is not caused by heavy rain alone—it is where extreme weather meets vulnerable communities and infrastructure.
