Classes suspended in several Metro Manila cities

Manila, Philippines – Several local government units in Metro Manila suspended face-to-face classes on Tuesday, August 11, as authorities braced for continued rainfall brought by the southwest monsoon, or habagat. A number of areas elsewhere in the country also declared no classes for the day.

Affected schools in Metro Manila shifted to alternative learning modalities for the day, following separate announcements from individual city governments.

Full suspension across all levels

Marikina City, Mandaluyong City, Caloocan City, Parañaque City, Valenzuela City and Malabon City suspended face-to-face classes for all levels, covering both public and private schools.

San Juan City, Pasay City, Las Piñas City, Taguig City, Navotas City, Muntinlupa City and the City of Manila likewise suspended in-person classes across all levels in public and private schools.

Partial suspensions in Quezon City and Makati

Quezon City limited its suspension to child development centers, kindergarten, and grades 1 to 12, covering both public and private schools.

Makati City’s suspension was narrower still, applying only to daycare, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes, and only in public schools within the city.

No announcement from Pasig

Pasig City had not issued any announcement on class suspensions as of the report, leaving students, parents and teachers in the city awaiting word from local officials on whether classes would proceed as scheduled.

The suspensions reflect the continuing impact of the southwest monsoon on Metro Manila, with local governments expected to issue further updates as weather conditions develop through the day.
