Alberta is calling for greater control over immigration and the selection of permanent residents as demand for provincial nominations continues to exceed available spots.
The province has 6,403 nomination spaces under the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program for 2026, while tens of thousands of candidates are competing for immigration opportunities through the program.
Alberta says immigration should be more closely tied to the province’s labour needs, including giving stronger opportunities to workers and graduates with skills needed by local employers. The provincial government has also introduced measures aimed at giving Alberta greater oversight of parts of the immigration system.
The issue comes amid wider debate over permanent residency pathways for international students and temporary workers in Canada.
Under Canada’s immigration system, provinces can nominate candidates through their provincial programs, while the federal government sets national immigration levels and makes the final decision on permanent residence applications. Ottawa’s 2026–2028 immigration plan increased the national target for the Provincial Nominee Program to 91,500 admissions in 2026.
Alberta’s position adds to calls for provinces to have greater influence over immigration decisions based on their individual workforce and economic needs.
