QUEZON CITY, Philippines — More than 11,000 residents have been evacuated to designated shelters across Quezon City as persistent rains from the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat triggered deep flooding in several communities.
As of 10 a.m. Tuesday, the city government said 3,372 families or 11,270 individuals from 31 barangays were staying in 52 evacuation shelters.
Barangay Bagong Silangan recorded the highest number of evacuees, with 621 families or 2,216 individuals housed at the Bagong Silangan Evacuation Center and Bagong Silangan Elementary School.
It was followed by Barangay Quirino 2A, where 343 families or 1,010 individuals were sheltered at the barangay hall, and Barangay Manresa, which accommodated 316 families or 1,129 individuals at its covered court.
The city government has also prepared for the needs of evacuees beyond shelter. The Veterinary Department established pet evacuation centers in various parts of the city, allowing residents to bring their animals to safer locations.
Meanwhile, the Quezon City Health Department is providing free doxycycline prophylaxis at health centers, including those serving evacuation sites, for residents who have been exposed to or waded through floodwaters as a preventive measure against leptospirosis.
All QC health centers are open Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Residents are advised to seek medical consultation and follow health authorities’ guidance before taking the preventive medication.
For emergencies and assistance, residents may contact QC Helpline 122.
