WASHINGTON Concerns are growing among U.S. allies in Asia over Washington’s commitment to regional security after President Donald Trump moved to scale back major military exercises and redeploy key forces from the Indo-Pacific amid the ongoing war with Iran.

The decision to reduce joint military drills with South Korea comes as the United States shifts military resources toward the Middle East, including the redeployment of the USS George Washington from the Pacific. The move has left the Indo-Pacific without a U.S. aircraft carrier presence, according to the Financial Times.

The changes have fueled questions over whether the United States can maintain its deterrence capabilities in Asia while its military resources are increasingly stretched by the conflict in Iran.

The development is particularly significant for U.S. allies and partners in the region, including Japan, South Korea, Australia and the Philippines, as concerns over China’s growing military assertiveness continue.

The Philippines has strengthened defense cooperation with the United States in recent years, including expanded military exercises and closer coordination in the Indo-Pacific.

Analysts warn that any perceived reduction in U.S. military presence could affect regional calculations, particularly as tensions involving China, Taiwan and the South China Sea remain high.

The debate comes as Washington prepares for further engagement with Beijing, raising questions over whether the United States can balance its commitments in the Indo-Pacific while responding to security demands in the Middle East.
