JAPAN – The Japan Meteorological Agency announced a 7.2 magnitude earthquake on June 25, 2026. It was estimated to have occurred off the coast of Iwate Prefecture at around 7:30 AM (Tokyo time). It was also read to have a depth of about 50 kilometres.
While the original preliminary reading was measured to be 6.9, the Japan Meteorological Agency amended it later on to a 7.2 magnitude. Fortunately, no tsunami warnings or advisories have been given, and no major damage has been reported in the affected areas. However, some shinkansen bullet train services have been temporarily suspended.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi issued the government to work closely with the local authorities and asked that the citizens remain alert in case of aftershocks.
No casualties and at least four people injured have been recorded so far, with citizens waiting for further updates.
