QUEZON CITY, Philippines — The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) have officially transitioned from observers to active participants in the annual Balikatan Exercises, joining the opening ceremony at Camp Aguinaldo on Monday, April 20, 2026.
Running through May 8, this participation marks a significant escalation in Canada’s military engagement within the Indo-Pacific region.
While the CAF has maintained a presence at the exercise in previous years, the 41st iteration witnesses Canadian forces training closely with their U.S. and Philippine counterparts.
The mission covers a comprehensive range of operations, including air and missile defense, coastal defense, maritime strike operations, and multinational coordination.
Canada’s contribution involves a diverse array of assets and units from the Royal Canadian Navy, Canadian Army, and Royal Canadian Air Force.
Key deployments in this exercise include HMCS Charlottetown and its embarked CH-148 Cyclone maritime helicopter, alongside members of the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry.
Specialized support is also being provided by CAF Cyber Command, the Canadian Forces Health Services Group, Military Police, and Special Operations Forces Command.
Canada’s shift to an active role this year underscores a deepened commitment to its partners in the Philippines and the broader strategic stability of the Indo-Pacific.
The Balikatan Exercise, meaning “shoulder-to-shoulder” in Tagalog, is designed to strengthen collective defense and regional security of allied forces in the region.
