GENEVA, Switzerland — Non-profit rights group Amnesty International called on the US, Israel, and Iran to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East that constantly put civilians in the region at grave risk and danger.
“Amnesty International urges all parties to abide by international humanitarian and human rights law. Civilians must be protected,” the group stated.
It said it is closely monitoring developments in the region, assessing civilian harm and its impact on broader human rights.
Similarly, Secretary-General António Guterres of the United Nations (UN) amplified the same call on Saturday, urging all parties involved to put an end to the hostilities in the Middle East that “undermine international peace & security”.
“I call for an immediate cessation of hostilities & de-escalation. Failing to do so risks a wider regional conflict with grave consequences for civilians & regional stability. I strongly encourage all parties to return immediately to the negotiating table,” Guterres wrote in a post.
Guterres stressed that there is no other viable alternative to the peaceful settlement of international disputes but through full accordance with international law, including the UN Charter.
US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have jointly justified the attack on Iran for its alleged plan to establish its nuclear weapons program, which supposedly posed a threat to the stability and peace in the region.
