MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) is coordinating with the Bureau of Customs (BOC) and other agencies for the prompt disposal of seized smuggled and illegally manufactured cigarettes.

PNP chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the move aims to safeguard the integrity of anti-smuggling operations.

“These confiscated cigarettes must be disposed of properly in the soonest possible time to prevent any speculation and eventually maintain the integrity of the aggressive police operations against this illegal product,” Nartatez said in a statement Monday.

He ordered operating units to immediately turn over seized cigarettes to the BOC, the Bureau of Internal Revenue, or other appropriate agencies, and stressed strict documentation and monitoring of confiscated items.

Amid the nationwide crackdown, Nartatez urged the public to serve as the police’s “eyes and ears,” as he assured informants of protection.

“To report suspected sellers or manufacturers of illegal cigarettes, you can use the Unified 911 hotline. Hindi niyo kailangang matakot dahil confidential ang inyong identity (You don’t have to be afraid because your identity will be kept confidential),” he said.

Nartatez advised the public to provide the exact location and, if possible, the brand of the illegal cigarettes being sold.
