Political icon, longtime public servant: Juan Ponce Enrile dies at 101

MANILA – Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile, one of the country’s most enduring and influential political figures, passed away on Thursday. He was 101.

His daughter, Katrina Ponce Enrile, announced the former Senate President’s passing in a social media post, saying he “peacefully returned to his Creator” at 4:21 p.m., surrounded by family at their home.

“It was his heartfelt wish to take his final rest at home, with his family by his side. We were blessed to honor that wish and to be with him in those sacred final moments,” she said.

The family has requested privacy as they mourn, with details of public viewing and interment to be announced soon.

Born in Gonzaga, Cagayan, on Feb. 14, 1924, Enrile has been a central figure in politics for seven decades, serving in key roles in both the legislative and executive branches.

He was a lawyer, Cabinet official, senator, and later Senate President, a post he held from 2008 to 2013.

Enrile first rose to prominence in the 1960s, joining the Marcos administration and eventually serving as Minister of National Defense.

He was elected to the Senate in 1987, where he became known for his mastery of legislation and legal debate.

Over the years, Enrile played key roles in landmark political events and government reforms.

He also returned to public service in recent years as Chief Presidential Legal Counsel under President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

Throughout his long career, Enrile was regarded for his sharp intellect, extensive knowledge of law and governance, and resilience in public life.

“He dedicated much of his life to the service of the Filipino people,” Katrina said.

“At this time, we humbly ask for understanding as our family grieves privately and honors his memory in peace.”

The family will make further announcements on arrangements for public viewing and funeral rites in the coming days.

Enrile was reportedly under intensive care since earlier this week due to pneumonia.
