Violators of public health orders in B.C. can be slapped with fines up to $2000

British Columbians who will be found violating the public health orders in the province can now be fined with up to $2,000.

Effective immediately, Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth announced this on Friday, August 21, saying that police and other enforcement officers can give a $2,000 worth of violation tickets to organizers and hosts of a gathering or event with more than 50 people, those who will not keep a list or contact information of their attendees, and those who will host more than five people in vacation accommodation.

“Enough is enough. These irresponsible actions are putting our most vulnerable at risk.

These actions could cost people their lives that is why stricter enforcement is necessary,” Farnworth said in a news conference.

He stressed that having less than 50 people does not automatically make a gathering legal, explaining that the attendees should still follow all safety guidelines.

“So if you’re hosting a large penthouse party, organizing a street gathering, or drum circle on the beach, we will be watching,” he said.

In addition, the province will be also taking actions against “problematic attendees and individuals.” A $200 violation ticket will be given to individuals who are actively encouraging large gatherings or events or who will refuse to leave when told to do so. Those who will be caught not following business safe operating plans or engaging in bullying or abusive behavior towards employees will also be fined $200.

“If you’re asked to leave a gathering, leave. Don’t yell at the waiter who asks you not to push your tables together at a restaurant. Don’t be belligerent towards the hard-working people who are trying to keep us all safe,” Farnworth advised.

Aside from the police officers, Farnworth said staff from various provincial ministries — including liquor, cannabis, and gaming inspectors, community safety unit inspectors, and conversation officers — will also help in enforcing the measures.

“WorkSafeBC investigators will also assist through their existing authority and tools,” he added.

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) asked the public to report to them those whom they will see breaking the public health orders through calling 311.

Currently, British Columbia has more than 4,900 coronavirus cases, after it lodged 90 new cases on Friday. More than 3,800 have recovered from the virus, while more than 200 died in the province.
