MANILA – A total of 1,645 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Qatar had been displaced due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic, the Philippine Embassy in Doha disclosed on Tuesday.

“Ang epekto ay may mga job displacement ang OFWs sa Qatar (The effect of Covid-19 is there had been job displacement of OFWs in Qatar). Based on the recent data ng POLO (of the Philippine Overseas Labor Office), verified is 1,645 job displacement of land-based OFWs in Qatar,” Ambassador Alan Timbayan said during the Laging Handa briefing.

At least 4,055 Filipino workers have also been forced to go on leave amid the measures implemented to arrest the spread of Covid-19, he added.

Timbayan said the embassy continues to provide services and assistance to Filipinos in the Gulf state.

“Patuloy po nating sundan ang mga patakaran na pinapatupad ng government of Qatar tungkol sa paglaban ng Covid-19 (Let us continue to monitor the measures implemented by the government of Qatar in battling Covid-19). Stay home and keep safe,” Timbayan said.

Data from the Department of Foreign Affairs show that as of last January, Qatar was host to some 241,109 overseas Filipinos – the fourth in the Middle East, next to Saudi Arabia with 865,121; the United Arab Emirates with 648,929; and Kuwait with 241,999.
