The Meralco Bolts are still in the running to enter the 2019 Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner’s Cup playoffs after stunning the San Miguel Beermen (SMB), 95-91, last Wednesday, July 17 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Delroy James, Meralco’s import, totalled 34 points with six assists, five rebounds, four steals and two blocks. Guard and former Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Blue Eagle Chris Newsome was guiding James at 20 points, while Raymond Almazan and Bryan Faundo contributed 15 and 10 points respectively.

For San Miguel, it was import Chris McCollough who had a double-double of 27 points and 16 rebounds, while June Mar Fajardo scored 27 points and had 13 boards. Terrence Romeo chipped double digits as well on the scoreboard with 11 points.

Meralco coach Norman Black stated that this was “a game [they] really needed,” telling the media, “We really needed it very badly just to stay alive … Good effort for my players offensively and defensively. A lot of guys stepped up for us.” He also said, “Hats off to Blackwater for giving us a chance when they beat Alaska last game. Good effort from my players today offensively, defensively. I think a lot of guys stepped up for us,” referring to the Elite securing their number three spot by preventing the Aces from securing the final spot in the playoffs last Saturday, July 13.

Meralco now stands with four wins and seven losses, earning a shot at the number eight spot to enter the quarterfinals as they battle it out with Alaska for that final spot next Friday, July 19. Looking ahead at the do-or-die match, he shared, “It’s better to have life than be dead. Even in real life, that’s just the way that it is. We get to live another day to fight Alaska. I know it’s gonna be a tough game for us but at least we have a chance for a playoff now.”
