Mighty Sports enters Dubai quarterfinals with back-to-back victory
Team Mighty Sports, representing the Philippines, waves past home team United Arab Emirates with an 86-78 victory at the Dubai International Championship last Sunday, February 3 at the Shabab Al Ahli Club.
Import Randolph Morris, Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) player Justin Brownlee, and Filipino-American guard Roosevelt Adams performed for their team, contributing 20, 18, and 18 points respectively, while their opponents were led by Rashed Al Zaabi and Omar Alshabibi.
When talking about moving to the Philippines to pursue his basketball career, Adams recently told the media, “I’m very fortunate. Not many players get a chance to play for the country. I’m lucky to be one of them.” He added, “I love to shoot. I’m an athlete. I like to rebound, defend whoever you need me to defend. I do all the guard’s work. Coach tells me what to do, I’ll do it.”
In reaction to their second win in a row, Mighty Sports head coach Charles Tiu shared, “What’s good is that we won and I expected us to win this game,” but added, “[However] honestly, this is not the level of the tournament. If we play this [kind of] game the next few days, we’re going to lose. We might not make it past the quarterfinals.”
Unfortunately for Mighty Sports, former National Basketball Association (NBA) pro Lamar Odom was scoreless for his entire 13 minutes of game time, with Coach Charles stating, “I think we have to be patient with Lamar. I expect a bit more.”
Mighty Sports, which is sponsored by SMDC, Go for Gold, Oriental Group, and Healthcube will next see action on Tuesday as they face Syria. They have also secured a spot in the quarterfinals, which will begin on Thursday, February 7.
