MANILA — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is still pushing for the installation of cable cars as an alternative mode of public transportation.

DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade said the department is currently in negotiations with various proponents to offer a rate that is similar to public utility vehicles (PUVs).

“There are also conversations I have not forgotten about the cable car. We are finalizing certain details.

Hopefully, I would be able to convince proponents to agree on a rate,” Tugade said in a speech at the Asia CEO Forum at the Manila Marriott Hotel in Pasay City on Thursday.

The proposed cable car system will start in the Pasig area with a capacity of 35 passengers per car.

The DOTr earlier said it is exploring the possibility of securing technical assistance or funding from the French government for a feasibility study on cable cars.

He said the Philippines should consider the experience of Bolivia that use cable cars to help address the country’s traffic situation.
