UNITED NATIONS –The United Nations on Monday condemned a terrorist attack on a mosque in the city of Quebec, Canada, voicing its belief that Canada and Canadians “will come together to reject any attempts to sow division based on religion.”

“We are following developments in the investigation of the horrific attack on a mosque in Quebec,” UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said at a daily news briefing here. “We condemn this apparent act of terrorism on a place of worship.”

“We trust that Canada and Canadians, who have shown such leadership in promoting diversity and tolerance, will come together to reject any attempts to sow division based on religion,” he said.

“We send our condolences to the people, to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to those who were wounded,” he added.

Gunmen opened fire in the mosque in Quebec Sunday night, killing six people and wounding eight others, reports said, adding that Canadian police said they arrested one man outside the mosque and another suspect turned himself in.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the attack, calling it a “terrorist attack on Muslims.”
