A Hamilton-based air ambulance carrying six people has gone missing over the Atlantic Ocean while flying from Bermuda to Boston, prompting a search by the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Gulfstream G100, operated by Latitude Air Ambulance, departed L.F. Wade International Airport in Bermuda late Friday and was scheduled to arrive at Boston Logan International Airport early Saturday. The Federal Aviation Administration issued a search-and-rescue alert after losing contact with the aircraft.

The plane was carrying four Canadians and two Bermudian passengers. The Canadian crew included two pilots and two medical staff who had travelled to Bermuda to pick up a patient and the patient’s family member.

Flight tracking data showed the aircraft descending sharply from around 24,000 feet to roughly 11,000 feet shortly before contact was lost. Air traffic control recordings also indicated the pilot reported electrical problems and declared an emergency as the aircraft approached the U.S. coast.

The U.S. Coast Guard deployed aircraft, a helicopter and surface vessels to search an area off Nantucket, Massachusetts. Search teams later reported finding a debris field in the Atlantic, while the search for those aboard continued.

Latitude Air Ambulance said the incident was the first time it had lost contact with one of its aircraft. The company operates medical evacuation and repatriation flights from its base at John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport.

Canadian authorities are also monitoring the search, as families and officials await further information on the fate of those aboard.
