PHILIPPINES – For decades, parts of the Bangsamoro region were defined by armed conflict. Now, the ballot box is taking center stage as the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao prepares for its first parliamentary elections.

The historic polls are expected to test whether years of peace efforts can translate into a stronger system of democratic representation, with voters choosing leaders who will help shape the region’s new parliamentary government.

The shift from weapons to elections carries significance in a region where political disputes and armed violence have long overlapped. The upcoming vote offers communities another way to settle political differences — through campaigns, platforms and ultimately, ballots.

Election officials in BARMM are preparing for the polls, while political groups and candidates compete for seats in the parliament that will help govern the autonomous region.

Beyond the candidates and campaign battles, the election represents a test of the Bangsamoro peace process itself. A successful transition to electoral politics could strengthen the region’s push for stability, self-governance and inclusive development.
