British Columbia premier-designate Lorne Doerkson says he and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney share priorities on economic development following talks aimed at strengthening cooperation between the provincial and federal governments.
Doerkson described their virtual meeting on October 27 as productive, with both leaders discussing ways to attract investment, create jobs and expand economic opportunities across the province and the country.
Following the meeting, Doerkson emphasized British Columbia’s potential role in Canada’s economic future, particularly through investment and development.
The discussions included opportunities in the natural gas sector, particularly liquefied natural gas (LNG), as both governments look at ways to encourage private-sector investment and strengthen Canada’s economic position.
Doerkson also expressed his intention to work with Ottawa on trade-related challenges and opportunities, infrastructure development and public services across British Columbia.
The meeting came days after the B.C. Conservatives won a majority government in the provincial election, ending nine years of New Democratic Party rule.
Doerkson has campaigned on expanding natural gas production, reducing regulatory barriers and attracting investment. These priorities overlap with Carney’s broader efforts to strengthen Canada’s economy and position the country as an energy supplier in international markets.
However, the incoming administration will face challenges involving trade uncertainty, infrastructure needs and differing views on resource development, including concerns raised by Indigenous communities and environmental groups.
The meeting marks an early step toward cooperation between the two governments as Doerkson prepares to assume office and advance his party’s economic agenda.
