DPWH orders Gumain River dredging after dike collapse in Pampanga

LUBAO, Pampanga — Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon has ordered the dredging of the Gumain River after a dike collapsed in Barangay Santo Cristo amid heavy southwest monsoon rains.

Dizon inspected the damaged structure on Sunday, August 30, together with Pampanga Governor Lilia “Nanay” Pineda, Vice Governor Dennis “Delta” Pineda and Lubao Mayor Esmeralda “Esmie” Pineda.

According to the Department of Public Works and Highways, the dike collapsed due to strong currents after the Gumain River and Santo Cristo Dam overflowed.

Dizon directed the DPWH to deepen the river to improve the flow of water toward the Pasig-Potrero River. He also ordered the removal of garbage and logs obstructing the dam.

The secretary assured local officials that funding would be provided to repair the collapsed dike and an eroded 600-meter section of the flood-mitigation structure.

Continuous heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon triggered flooding across Pampanga and other parts of Luzon over the weekend.

State weather bureau PAGASA said monsoon rains were expected to persist over Pampanga and several other provinces in Luzon.
