Norway’s King Harald V dies at 89 after decades on the throne

Norway’s King Harald V, one of Europe’s longest-serving monarchs, has died at the age of 89, the Royal Palace announced.

Harald, who became king in 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V, reigned for more than three decades and became a familiar figure in Norwegian public life.

His reign was marked by a largely ceremonial role, with the monarch serving as a symbol of national unity while Norway continued to evolve socially and politically.

Despite periods of health concerns in recent years, Harald continued to carry out royal duties and maintain a visible presence alongside members of the Norwegian royal family.

His death marks the end of an era for Norway, with his reign spanning more than 30 years and witnessing significant changes in the country and the wider world.

King Harald was also known for his personal interests in sailing and sports, having represented Norway in sailing competitions at three Olympic Games before becoming king.

He is survived by Queen Sonja, whom he married in 1968, and their children, Crown Prince Haakon and Princess Märtha Louise.

After more than three decades on the throne, Norway bids farewell to a king whose reign became woven into the country’s modern history.
