PHILIPPINES – The Armed Forces of the Philippines rejected recent claims from the Chinese Embassy in Manila regarding the BRP Sierra Madre, firmly stating that the Philippines will “never abandon” the grounded vessel at Ayungin Shoal.
In its statement, the AFP maintained that the BRP Sierra Madre remains an important symbol of the country’s sovereignty and presence in the West Philippine Sea.
The military also reiterated its commitment to supporting and maintaining the vessel, which serves as an outpost for Filipino troops stationed at Ayungin Shoal.
The AFP’s remarks came after the Chinese Embassy issued statements questioning the Philippines’ continued presence and activities around the shoal.
The Philippine military stressed that it will continue to carry out its responsibilities in protecting the country’s territory and personnel in the area.
The AFP’s latest statement underscores Manila’s position that it will maintain its presence at Ayungin Shoal despite continued tensions with China in the West Philippine Sea.
