Philippine defense and maritime officials have raised concerns over the passage of China’s Liaoning aircraft carrier group near the country, describing the movement as a display of Beijing’s military strength even as the Armed Forces of the Philippines said there was no immediate cause for alarm.
The Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy carrier group passed through waters near Mindanao on October 22, traveling along the country’s western seaboard before heading toward the Celebes Sea.
The formation came within about 15 nautical miles of the Philippine landmass, according to AFP officials. Its movement was tracked by Philippine forces as it passed near Zamboanga del Norte and Sarangani.
The Philippine Navy deployed the BRP Diego Silang and BRP Emilio Jacinto to monitor the group, with the Philippine Coast Guard’s BRP Sarangani also taking part in the operation. The Philippine Air Force provided aerial surveillance using a Black Hawk helicopter and an NC-212i aircraft.
Philippine forces issued radio challenges to the Chinese vessels but received no response, officials said.
AFP spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad said the passage was part of China’s periodic aircraft carrier training exercises and was not an unusual occurrence. He emphasized that Philippine authorities continued monitoring the formation throughout its transit.
The incident comes amid continuing tensions over maritime security and competing claims in the South China Sea. While the military sought to reassure the public, the movement of a Chinese carrier group close to Philippine territory highlighted the importance of maintaining surveillance and readiness at sea.
The AFP said its monitoring operations remain active as it tracks foreign naval and maritime activity within the country’s areas of interest.
