MANILA — Vice President Jejomar Binay’s camp hits back at the Senate for ordering the arrest and detention of 14 of his aides and business associates.

Binay’s camp described the Senate’s move as nothing but political harassment in a move to “destroy” LP’s “formidable rival” in next year’s polls.

He also added that the decision was a part of the Senate’s plan “designed to bring the Vice President down to his knees.”

Binay’s spokesman, Rico Quicho also criticized the government for allegedly  ignoring the rule on private individuals.

“It is a shame that this administration has brazenly ignored the rule of law. Private individuals have been insulted and their rights trampled in full view of millions of our people,” said Binay’s spokesman, Rico Quicho.

The Senate on Tuesday ordered the detention of Binay’s allies following their non-compliance of the Senate’s invitation to attend the hearings conducted to look into the corruption allegations against Binay.

Among those in the list of persons ordered to be arrested by the Senate is Binay’s financial adviser, Gerry Limlingan, Marie Aldon, Danilo Villas, Aida Alcantara, Hirene Lopez, Irene Chong, Imee Chong, Kim Tung Chong, Iris Chong, Erlinda Chong, Kimsfer Chong, Anne Lorraine Buencamino-Tiu, James and his brother Antonio Tiu.

Limlingan was earlier reported to have joint bank accounts with Binay and were ordered frozen by the Court of Appeals.

Also among the list are Binay’s secretary Ebeng Baloloy, engineer Line de la Peña and Bernadette Portallano.
