Deadly flooding along the Nepal-Tibet border is putting a spotlight on the growing risks posed by a warming climate and rapidly changing mountain environments.

The disaster has affected communities in remote areas, where intense rainfall, melting glaciers and unstable terrain can combine to trigger sudden floods and landslides.

Scientists have warned that rising temperatures are accelerating glacier melt across the Himalayas, increasing the amount of water stored in unstable lakes and raising the threat of glacial lake outburst floods.

For communities living downstream, these disasters can strike with little warning, sweeping away homes, roads and bridges and cutting off entire areas from rescue and relief operations.

The latest flooding has also highlighted how climate-related disasters are becoming increasingly difficult to separate from other extreme weather events, as warming temperatures intensify risks in already vulnerable mountain regions.

As rescue teams continue to search for missing people, the disaster serves as another warning for communities living beneath the Himalayas, as the glaciers change, so does the danger below them.
